JFT-Basic Test: Format, Passing Score and How to Prepare

The JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese) checks whether you have enough Japanese for everyday life and work in Japan. It is a 60-minute computer-based test with about 50 questions in four sections, scored from 10 to 250. A score of 200 or more shows A2 level, which is the Japanese requirement for the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa (alongside a skills test for your field). You see your score on screen at the end of the test. To prepare, focus on practical vocabulary, listening to everyday conversations and reading signs, notices and short messages, not just grammar.

The four sections

SectionWhat it tests
Script and VocabularyReading hiragana, katakana and common kanji, and knowing everyday words
Conversation and ExpressionChoosing natural phrases and grammar for common situations
Listening ComprehensionUnderstanding conversations, announcements and instructions
Reading ComprehensionUnderstanding signs, notices, messages, timetables and short texts

Each section has around a dozen questions. There is no separate time limit for each section, but you cannot go back once you move on, so keep an eye on the clock. Check the Japan Foundation’s official JFT-Basic website for current test locations, dates and fees.

JFT-Basic or JLPT N4?

For the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa, JLPT N4 or above is also accepted. The JFT-Basic is often more convenient: it is held many times a year at test centres in several countries, and results come quickly, while the JLPT is usually held only in July and December. The JFT-Basic also focuses more on practical communication. If you also want a certificate employers recognise widely for other jobs, the JLPT is still useful: see the JLPT and other Japanese tests and a study plan for JLPT N4.

How to prepare

  • Master kana and the first few hundred kanji. Start with hiragana and katakana, then learn the kanji on signs, menus and forms.
  • Learn words by situation. Shopping, transport, health, work instructions, housing. The test is built around daily life in Japan.
  • Listen every day. Short dialogues and announcements, played at natural speed. Try to catch the key information: when, where, what to do.
  • Read real-life texts. Notices, rules at work, rubbish collection schedules and simple messages.
  • Practise on a computer. Use the official sample questions so the format and timing feel familiar.

Japanese for work, not just the test

Passing the JFT-Basic gets you the visa; being able to talk to your manager, understand safety instructions and chat with co-workers is what makes life in Japan go well. Practise real phrases for your first week at a Japanese company, asking for time off and emergencies.

Preparing with a tutor

Hanabuddies offers online Japanese lessons with native tutors, one-to-one or in small groups. For JFT-Basic preparation, a tutor can check your level, build a plan to your test date, practise listening and reading in the test style, and help you speak the everyday Japanese you will need at work in Japan.
