JLPT Testing Accommodations for Candidates with Disabilities
Yes, the JLPT offers testing accommodations for candidates with disabilities. Depending on your needs and what your test centre can provide, these can include braille or large-print test papers, extra time, a separate room, permission to use hearing aids or other aids, and wheelchair access. You need to apply in advance, usually when you register, through the local organisation that runs the test in your country, and you may be asked for supporting documents. Ask early, because requests take time to arrange.
What kinds of accommodations exist
| Need | Examples of support |
|---|---|
| Visual | Braille test papers, large-print test papers, magnifiers, a seat near the light. |
| Hearing | Use of hearing aids, a seat near the speaker, written instructions. |
| Physical | Wheelchair access, an accessible desk, help marking the answer sheet. |
| Other | A separate room, extra time for some sections, permission to bring medication. |
What is available varies by country and test centre, so treat this list as a guide and check the official JLPT website and your local host organisation for the current rules.
How to apply
- Contact your local host organisation before registration opens and ask what they offer and what documents they need.
- Submit the request with your registration, or by the deadline they give you. Late requests may not be possible.
- Prepare documents, such as a doctor’s note or proof of disability, if asked. Ask whether a translation is needed.
- Confirm the arrangements in writing before test day, including the room and timing.
For the registration process itself, see how to register for the JLPT abroad.
Preparing in the format you’ll sit
- If you’ll have a large-print paper or extra time, practise with enlarged practice tests and time yourself with your new limit.
- If listening is hard, focus on reading and grammar points that can make up your total, and check how the sectional pass marks work in JLPT results and certificates.
- Do full mock exams under test conditions. See JLPT practice tests and JLPT test-day tips.
If the JLPT doesn’t suit you
Some people choose a different test or skip testing altogether. See JLPT vs other Japanese tests to compare.
How Hanabuddies can help
Our native tutors can build a JLPT plan around your needs, prepare practice materials in the format you’ll use on the day, and run timed mock tests online. We can also help you write a clear request to your test centre. We don’t run the JLPT and can’t approve accommodations; your local host organisation decides.
