Translating Packaging and Labels for Japan: What to Translate and How

To sell a product in Japan, the packaging or label normally needs Japanese for the information customers and rules expect: what the product is, its ingredients or materials, how to use it, warnings, and the importer or seller in Japan. Exact labelling rules depend on the product (food, cosmetics, electrical goods and children’s products all have their own), so confirm the requirements with your importer or a regulatory specialist, then have the text translated by a native speaker and checked on the final artwork. Japanese often fits in less width than English, but needs a readable size and careful line breaks.

What usually needs Japanese

ItemNotes

Description and claimsShort, concrete benefits. Be careful with health or effect claims, which are tightly controlled.
Ingredients or materials原材料名 for food, 全成分 for cosmetics, 素材 for goods.
Instructions使用方法: clear numbered steps.
Warnings注意事項: safety, storage, allergies.
Seller or importer detailsName and contact in Japan, often required.
Origin, contents, datesCountry of origin (原産国), quantity, best-before or expiry date.

Fitting Japanese into your design

  • Leave space early. Ask for the Japanese before the design is final, not after.
  • Use a Japanese font with full kanji support; Western fonts won’t display it.
  • Check line breaks. Japanese has no spaces, so a designer may split words badly. Have a native speaker check the artwork.
  • Horizontal text is standard on modern packaging; vertical text is optional and decorative.
  • Minimum sizes may apply to some information; your importer can confirm.

A simple process

  1. Confirm with your importer what must appear on the label.
  2. Send us all the text, the product details and any existing Japanese.
  3. We translate and adapt the marketing copy, and keep technical terms consistent.
  4. Your designer places the text; we check the final artwork before print.
