Getting Your Japanese Writing Corrected: Essays, Diaries and Exam Answers

The most useful way to get a Japanese essay or piece of writing corrected is to have a native speaker mark your mistakes, explain why each one is wrong, and then rewrite it yourself. A corrected copy you only read helps a little. Understanding the corrections and fixing them yourself is what actually improves your writing. A tutor can do this for diaries, essays, exam writing, emails and job applications. Here’s how good correction works and how to get the most from it.

What a good correction covers

  • Grammar and particles: は vs が, verb forms, missing or wrong particles.
  • Word choice: words that exist but don’t fit, such as using a formal written word in a casual diary.
  • Natural phrasing: sentences that are correct but don’t sound like Japanese.
  • Style consistency: mixing です/ます with plain だ/である style in one text.
  • Kanji and kana: wrong kanji, kanji used where kana is more natural, and conversion mistakes.
  • Structure: whether paragraphs flow and the main point is clear, which matters for essays and exams.

Correction you learn from

Being handed a perfect version of your essay feels helpful, but you’ll often make the same mistakes next time. Better correction:

  1. Marks the mistakes without simply replacing everything.
  2. Explains the important ones, especially patterns you repeat.
  3. Lets you try the fix before showing the answer.
  4. Picks two or three priorities to work on next, so you aren’t buried in red ink.

Keep a list of your repeated mistakes. Most learners have five or six that cause half their errors.

What to send for correction

  • A short diary or journal a few times a week. This is one of the fastest ways to improve writing. Our guide on how to improve your Japanese writing has more ideas.
  • Practice answers for school exams, university courses or the writing in a speaking test.
  • Emails and messages you need to send to a host family, a teacher or a colleague.
  • Job application texts, such as a jiko PR or a motivation statement.
  • Speeches and presentations before you practise saying them.

A note on coursework and academic honesty

If your writing is for a graded assignment, check your school’s rules on outside help first. Many courses allow feedback but not someone else rewriting the work. Correction that points out mistakes and explains them, with you making the changes, normally keeps the work your own. When in doubt, ask your teacher.

Correction vs proofreading

Essay correction is for learning: the aim is that your next text has fewer mistakes. Proofreading is for publishing: the aim is that this text is perfect. If you need a finished Japanese text for customers or the public rather than practice, see our guide to Japanese proofreading.

Can’t I just use AI?

AI tools catch many grammar mistakes and are useful for a first check. But they often rewrite your text into something you couldn’t produce yourself, miss problems with politeness level, and don’t know which of your mistakes matter most. Use them as a first pass if you like, then go over the result with a person who can explain it.
