Bringing an Interpreter to a Business Dinner in Japan
At a business dinner in Japan, much of the real relationship-building happens away from the meeting table, so an interpreter can matter as much there as in the meeting. An English–Japanese interpreter at your side lets you follow the host’s toast and speeches, join the conversation, and avoid etiquette slips with seating, drinks and gifts. Brief them beforehand on who will attend and what you want to achieve, plan a seat for them close to you, and keep the talk friendly rather than business-heavy. Hanabuddies provides interpreters in person anywhere in Japan, and abroad, with the client covering travel costs.
What the interpreter helps with
| Moment | What we help with |
|---|---|
| Arrival and seating | Introductions, and where the guest of honour sits (上座, kamiza). |
| The toast | The host’s words before 乾杯, and your reply if you’re asked. |
| Conversation | Small talk, food, travel, hobbies; humour and tone, not just words. |
| Speeches | Short thank-you speeches at the start or end. See giving a short speech in Japanese. |
| Gifts and goodbyes | Presenting gifts and the closing thanks. See business gifts. |
How to brief your interpreter
- Guest list with names, companies and roles.
- Purpose: thanks after a deal, a first meeting, a celebration.
- Topics to avoid and anything sensitive in the relationship.
- Any speech you plan to give, so it can be prepared in advance.
- Dress and venue: some restaurants have tatami rooms where you remove shoes.
Etiquette with an interpreter at the table
- Speak to your guests, not the interpreter, and pause after a sentence or two.
- Plan a seat and a meal for the interpreter; at dinners they’re usually seated with the group.
- Don’t ask them to drink; interpreters normally stay sober to work well.
- A second venue (二次会) is common; agree in advance whether the interpreter will join.
For drinking etiquette, pouring for others and the second venue, see nomikai etiquette. If you’re hosting Japanese guests in your country, see hosting Japanese visitors.
